Chapter History
The Carbondale Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was chartered in September 1978 in Carbondale, Illinois, establishing a lasting legacy of sisterhood and service throughout Southern Illinois.
The journey toward chartering began when four members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated affiliated with the Paducah Alumnae Chapter in Paducah, Kentucky, to begin establishing an alumnae chapter in Carbondale. Those Sorors were Lillian Maxine McGhee Williams, Brenda Taylor Mitchell Garrison, Catherine Johnson-Johnson, and Lynn Michelle Warren Connley.
After affiliating with the Paducah Alumnae Chapter, Betty J. H. Brooks, Kay Giles, Ella Phillips Lacey, and Patricia Ann Cannon McNeil became members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated through the Paducah Alumnae Chapter.
With a shared commitment to sisterhood, scholarship, service, and social action, these women and their fellow charter members laid the foundation for what would become the Carbondale Alumnae Chapter.
Following its chartering, the chapter was formally introduced to the community with a reception featuring then-Regional Director Wilhelmina Goff as the guest speaker. That moment marked the beginning of a chapter whose legacy of service and community engagement continues today.
